We had the privilege of purchasing several choice items from a rare collection of southern American antiques this summer and this table was among the fine antiques we were able to take home. We believe that the tea table was constructed in the earlier part of the 19th century somewhere around central Virginia. Since we are primarily focused on Northeastern antiques we are unable to definitively say where exactly the table was built but it is our logical conclusion that it was originally made near Charlottesville, Virginia or the surrounding counties. We have been fortunate to have owned many fine southern tilting tea tables throughout the years and count this example among the choicest that we have offered. The table is constructed with an exceptional grade of southern black walnut which is well figured and made all the more vibrant in sunlight. The underside of the figured walnut rectangular top features the original brass crab lock mechanism which work by sliding a retractable knob and the two cleats which mount the table top to the pedestal base allowing it to tip up and down. The table has a boldly turned baluster form pedestal and three distinctive cornucopia shaped legs. The cornucopia has been a motif in American design since the 18th century signifying plenty and abundance. Each leg is dovetailed into the pedestal with two legs reinforced by a primitive iron brace which only serves to strengthen the legs. The table has a stately appearance and will make a fine addition to any collection of historical American furnishings. The table measures 19 1/4″ wide x 22 1/2″ deep x 29″ tall. When the top is flipped up the height is 41″ tall. less
