Comes from a rare art folio published by Crown Publishers, printed in Italy in circa 1969. Printed on one side. Hand tipped-in on a sheet of paper. Numbered: VIII. Information on the back of paper is related to another piece in the folio. Excellent condition – never framed.Overall 9.5″ W x 11.75″ HImage 7.25″ W x 5.25″ HThis work was almost unknown until 1944 when it was exhibited in Paris at the “Salon de la Liberation”. Because of its strictly rhythmical composition and its refined chromatic taste it deserves to be reckoned among the best that Picasso has created. There are elements in the background, mainly on the right, in which a cubistic conceptualism is traceable, and others, mainly on the left, that are interpreted in a more surrealistic manner. In contrast with all of them there stands out the striking black head of a bull–symbolizing, as Picasso stated himself, obtuse brutality and destruction–which is very similar to the bull’s head in Guernica. A flash of pointedly instantaneous poetic evocation lights up the transitions from one object to the other, from an underlying ethical meaning to its stylistic transportation. less
